On May 20–21, the Study Visit of the REFOCUS project on sustainable mobility took place in Stockholm, with Anna Giarandoni, Senior Project Manager, and Giacomo Nonino, Transport Engineer, representing ITL.
The meeting was an opportunity to take a closer look at how the city of Stockholm is implementing its Climate Action Plan, decarbonizing the transport sector through electrification and the use of advanced data management systems.
The visit began with a tour of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, both on-street and off-street, in the city center. After a closer look at the permit processes, pricing models, and lessons learned, the city’s Annual Report on Electric Vehicle Charging was presented, which is featured as a good practice within the REFOCUS project. The group also met Stockholm’s Vice Mayor, Lars Strömgren, who went into more detail about the city’s projects and challenges regarding urban development, traffic, and the environment.
Half of the cars sold in Stockholm in 2024 were electric, so the city is currently expanding its charging infrastructure. For each charging station installed in the city center, another is placed in a less populated area, ensuring balanced and equitable development across the metropolitan area.
The regional bus system, which serves 26 municipalities, is also gradually introducing electric buses. In addition, the city is experimenting with the use of biogas to power municipal service vehicles, such as waste collection trucks.
On the second day, which focused on environmental data and urban transformation, participants visited the future low-emission zone and learned about the operation of systems monitoring air quality, noise levels, and traffic flows. The Department of Mobility uses a custom-developed real-time data system, enabling planners to quickly access up-to-date information on traffic and mobility and align decisions with climate and transport goals.
Finally, the Environmental Barometer, a tool that monitors environmental performance over time, was presented, along with the redevelopment project of the Södertäljevägen highway, which includes plans for the creation of new residential areas, parks, and public spaces.
