Description
URBANE (Upscaling Innovative green uRBan Logistics Solutions Through Multi-Actor Collaboration and Physical Internet (PI) – iNspired Last Mile DelivEries) aims to develop new last-mile delivery solutions that combine green automated vehicles and shared space usage models. With the continued growth of the e-commerce sector, new challenges have emerged for urban supply chains, making it necessary to scale up last-mile transport solutions and make them more sustainable, as this is the part of the delivery process that generates the most emissions.
The project supports the transition toward efficient, resilient, safe, and sustainable last-mile transport by developing four Lighthouse Living Labs (LLs) in Helsinki, Bologna, Valladolid, and Thessaloniki. These LLs implement innovative, efficient, replicable and socially acceptable last-mile delivery solutions based on existing resources. Additionally, six early adopters (Follower Cities – Aarhus, Antwerp, La Rochelle, Mechelen, Prague, and Ravenna) are involved in feasibility studies for adopting these innovations.
European-level practical learning is facilitated by an innovation transferability platform that includes digital twin tools, open models, blockchain-enabled smart contracts, and a data-driven Impact Assessment Radar, enabling the adaptation and replication of LL solutions in two twin cities, Barcelona and Karlsruhe.
ITL is taking part in the Bologna LL, which implements the concept of Nearby Delivery Areas (NDAs) in alignment with the Sustainable Urban Logistics Plan (SULP) of the Metropolitan City of Bologna. Through a collaborative approach among logistics operators and the use of zero-emission vehicles, the LL aims to create a dedicated area for logistical activities near delivery destinations within the Limited Traffic Zone (LTZ). The NDA consists of an automated micro-hub where goods can be safely and efficiently transferred from traditional vans to light electrical vehicles, which can then complete the delivery within the LTZ.
