SUSPORT

SUSPORT (SUStainable PORTs) aims to strengthen the institutional capacity and cross-border governance of ports in the Italy-Croatia program area by creating a common model for environmental planning and energy efficiency to adopt coordinated mitigation measures. The project develops a cross-border plan model for the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of ports, which is adapted for each port through a tailor-made plan tested in 13 concrete pilot actions.

Based on the results, the ports in the program area sign a protocol for implementing a common cross-border strategy in this sector, harmonizing medium- and long-term policies to benefit citizens living nearby and in municipalities hosting commercial calls. Additionally, the project provides specific recommendations for the Macro-Regional Strategies EUSALP, EUSAIR, and EUSDR.

In particular, SUSPORT targets the following groups:

• General public
• Local, regional, and national public authorities
• Regional development agencies
• Enterprises, infrastructure providers and transport operators, including operators of multimodal logistics hubs
• Transport associations
• Education and training organizations, universities and research institutions

Within the project, ITL is drafting a model of action plan, by which each partner identifies measures for sustainability and energy efficiency to be realized in the medium- and long-term to tackle challenges assessed in the territorial needs assessments. ITL also elaborates a methodology for evaluating pilot actions of each partner, a concrete way to improve the role of ports as green gateways for freight flows, and elaborates a final assessment at cross-border level based on final reports from each partner.
