SMILE

SMILE (SMart green Innovative urban Logistics for Energy Efficient Mediterranean Cities) aims to develop and implement energy-efficient mobility solutions for Mediterranean smart cities, leveraging existing technologies, past experiences, and ongoing initiatives, while also addressing technical, economic, and related challenges. The project promotes innovative, green and cost-effective solutions for urban freight logistics in order to achieve an urban development which is smarter and more sustainable.

Areas of intervention include:

• Modeling, measuring, and assessing urban logistics needs, performance, energy efficiency, and externalities in a transnational context, adapting and improving existing models such as CityGoods (Emilia-Romagna) and FRETURB (LET Lyon).
• Definition and evaluation of transferable policies, strategies, plans, and measures for innovative and energy-efficient urban transport solutions, developing a systemic approach to select the most appropriate set of measures for different urban distribution contexts.
• Development of criteria and performance indicators, measurable by local and regional authorities, to support them in selecting and implementing innovative renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions, monitoring their effectiveness in both the short and long term.

The project tests solutions related to electric mobility, ICT technologies, operational and marketing tools through pilot activities involving public and private actors, implemented in 6 Mediterranean cities (4 of which are port cities) across 5 different countries: Montpellier, Bologna, Barcelona, Valencia, Piraeus, and Rijeka.

ITL leads activities related to capitalizing on previous experiences for the development of an urban logistics model with an energy-efficient approach. Additionally, the Foundation also coordinates the development of the policy framework and the Bologna pilot.
