Description
Shift2Zero (Shifting to Zero-Emission Logistics with Right-Sized, Mission-Focused, N1 eLCVs) aims to develop innovative functionalities and designs for zero-emission, mission-specific N1 electric light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs).
Current market dynamics in the EU show a gap between existing N1 vehicles and the evolving needs of urban logistics and climate targets. Dynamic requirements and the increasing environmental impact of logistics call for innovative solutions from both high-volume Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and new actors in the market. S2Z seeks to leverage the benefits of both vehicle platforms in the N1 segment—the multi-purpose “eDaily” platform by IVECO and the “Design-for-purpose” ATX platform by Alke—to contribute to the transition toward zero-emission logistics.
S2Z employs a 4-phase design approach focused on end-users and their needs. To this end, S2Z involves 5 mobility operators and logistics service providers, developing 6 new N1 vehicle concepts with advanced and safe functionalities to better fit the market, particularly in the segments of e-commerce, returns, and temperature-controlled deliveries. Prototypes will be built and tested in real-world operations across 6 pilot sites (Belgium, Greece, Italy, 2 in Norway, and Poland). The developed solutions include:
- Modular swappable concept for cargo body
- Vehicle control strategies with optimized tires and brakes
- Dynamically optimized space for dual transport of people and goods
- Thermal optimization and safe ergonomics in the cabin
- Multi-temperature controlled and energy-efficient cargo body
- Geofenced and right-sized vehicles
ITL coordinates activities related to the preparation of pilot actions, as well as the Bologna demonstrator. Together with Gruber Logistics and the Municipality of Bologna, ITL will test a new logistics model involving urban transshipment hubs near the city center and new tailored vehicles, equipped with innovative technologies for the delivery of refrigerated e-commerce products (such as wine and food).
