Description
PortCREW (Port–City Regions to Wave Med Cruise Destinations as Smart, Sustainable and Striking Eco-Tourism Systems) aims to make Mediterranean tourism more sustainable, managing the pressure while raising environmental awareness in cruisers.
As the cruise sector continues to grow, Mediterranean port-city regions need to address the impacts of mass tourism on the environment. At the same time, they need to be able to exploit and distribute the benefits that this trend can bring to local communities. To address these issues, the project will promote the sustainable development of Mediterranean port-city regions as green tourism destinations, by integrating cruises with inland experiences and services that leverage the growing attractiveness of natural and cultural resources.
5 MED cruise ports (Thessaloniki, Ravenna, Toulon, Valencia and Koper) will define, test, assess and share different smart and green collaborative measures to manage cruise tourist peaks more effectively, by providing new and improved accessibility solutions for inland natural and cultural assets. PortCREW eco-tourism systems, built around the cruise terminals of the network, will offer a shared platform of low-impact eco-solutions and strategies to manage high-pressure tourism flows. The platform will collect eco-touristic informations and help cruise managers and public authorities tackle over-tourism’s negative impacts.
ITL leads the project and, in particular, coordinates activities related to the testing of the PortCREW platform and the launch of new eco-tourism packages. The Foundation is also responsible for the development of the long -term strategy and action plans for better cruise flow management in the Mediterranean ports. Finally, ITL will develop the Ravenna pilot, which will focus on the only cruise terminal in Emilia-Romagna.
