Description

KASSETTS (Knowledge-enabled Access of Central Europe SMEs to Efficient Transnational Transport Solutions) aims to create a network of transport and logistics brokers at the European level, supported by ICT tools, to optimize and improve the freight transport of SMEs both locally and internationally.

Europe’s development strongly depends on SMEs and their transnational trade relations. Transport, logistics, and related ICT solutions play a fundamental role for SMEs, representing strategic levers for accessing Central European markets and integrating into supply and distribution chains.

However, they struggle to access efficient transnational transport solutions due to low shipping volumes, infrequent transport, and limited use of ICT technologies, which reduce their accessibility to the logistics supply. These obstacles lead to fragmented transport demand, a high number of unsaturated vehicles on the road, and low utilization of intermodal transport, contributing to increased transport emissions.

KASSETTS aims to overcome these challenges and address the need for ICT tools that help manufacturing companies, particularly SMEs, optimize their transnational logistics flows. To further improve these results and disseminate the model on a transnational scale, the project seeks to create a stable operational network of logistics brokers at the European level, based on an open-source policy, where each broker functions as a shared logistics office among SMEs. Each broker aggregates and optimizes the transport demand of the involved SMEs, defines optimal routes and transport modes at both regional and transnational levels in dynamic combination with others, matches SMEs’ demand to the logistics supply, and manages the exchange of transnational transport documents. The project implements four pilot actions in Italy, Germany, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Poland.

ITL is the project coordinator and, in particular, is responsible for activities related to the definition of the methodology and actions and plans for promoting collaboration in logistics. Additionally, the Foundation is responsible for the implementation of technical activities aimed at creating the broker network, as well as that of pilot actions.
