FUTUREMED (Freight and Passengers Supporting Infomobility Systems for a Sustainable Improvement of the Competitiveness of Port-Hinterland Systems of the MED Area) aims to enhance the competitiveness of the port systems in the MED area by improving accessibility through technological and procedural innovations while ensuring the sustainability of the transport system. The project is specifically focused on improving interoperable management information systems and reducing externalities.

The project addresses three strategic sectors that offer key opportunities for the growth and development of port regions in the MED area: freight traffic (Europe-Asia and intra-Mediterranean), passenger traffic (Ro-Pax), and tourist traffic (cruises). FUTUREMED aims to define and implement, through coordinated territorial actions and pilot activities, sustainable medium- and long-term development strategies. These strategies will focus on:

  • Removing barriers which limit port accessibility by sea and land
  • Integrating ports with the hinterland
  • Developing logistics activities and intermodal transport (industries and consumer markets) in port back areas
  • Enhancing infomobility to increase attractiveness and improve port system efficiency
  • Specializing port systems
  • Improving the quality of services that integrate the port with the hinterland (railways)

The analysis of port activities’ current sistuation, which is highly fragmented, together with port governance and transport services, serves as the starting point for designing and developing the exchange and implementation of best practices, as well as strategic institutional programs aimed at improving and specializing ports and their surrounding areas. To achieve this, the project includes activities focused on regulatory development, awareness-raising, and stakeholder involvement.

ITL coordinates the pilot action related to the development of the agri-food industry’s supply chain through an intermodal perspective. Specifically, the pilot aims to strengthen connections between ports and inland terminals and enhance logistics services and ICT solutions to improve connectivity between producers and the market.
