CROSSFREIGHT

Italian and Croatian ports in the Adriatic, as crucial nodes in the regional logistics chain, have seen a significant increase in intermodal traffic in recent years, connecting them to the hinterland via rail links. However, the multitude of actors operating in the port area has led to a gradual loss of efficiency, complicating integration between port operations, sorting, and last-mile rail processes. Last-mile operations, both within the port and at nearby inland rail nodes, are essential for the efficiency and competitiveness of rail services and port multimodal traffic, therefore it is vital to optimize them.

CROSSFREIGHT (Cross-border ICT Strategies for Freight Rail and Port Logistic Integration, Optimization, Sustainability and Security) aims to test and implement digital ICT tools in a new integrated project, creating common strategies to improve intermodal connections between logistics nodes in the hinterland and ports along the TEN-T networks through the following measures:

• Optimization of port-inland rail connections and last-mile processes
• Implementation of innovative ICT tools for railway efficiency in seven nodes connected to ports
• Strengthening cross-border strategies for regional and interregional rail freight transport
• Improvement of logistical accessibility and environmental performance at regional level

These objectives will be supported by communication and dissemination tools, with regular interaction with stakeholders at different levels: port, node, TEN-T corridor, national, macro-regional and European.

CROSSFREIGHT involves 8 key partners in the port and rail sectors, 4 from Italy and 4 from Croatia. As Lead Partner, ITL will ensure the coordination of all project and communication activities, the implementation of the pilot in the Port of Ravenna. The pilot aims to improve the coordination of shunting operations in the port by creating an ICT platform that all companies carrying out the maneuvers can use. ITL will collaborate with the Port Authority of Ravenna, which is also a shareholder of ITL, to develop this platform.
