Description

AirLED (Local Economic Development in Airport Catchment Areas) aims to enhance integrated polycentric development planning in airport catchment areas, along the common vision of becoming Airport Cities. Aviation is deemed to be one of the most dynamic industries in the world and airport planning requires intensive study and forethought. Airport-adjacent areas are increasingly regarded as catalysts for local economic development, but integrated economic development linked to airports calls for the functional division of tasks and scope of responsibility between cities and settlements in the vicinity of airports, as well as strengthened cooperation between multiple stakeholders, including municipalities, development agencies and private companies.

AirLED covers 3 thematic pillars:

  • Logistics and transport
  • Spatial development, environment and architecture
  • Business and investment development

The project contributes to the integration of economically isolated airport areas into urban development strategies, the creation of new jobs in
airport regions, as well as improved competitiveness and sustainable economic development of airport catchment areas. The project objective
will be achieved through the following core activities with main outputs:

  • Elaboration of EU state-of-art report linked to Airport City development
  • Status quo analysis for each region
  • Creation of a regional development coordination body with major stakeholders (RDCB) for each region and of an Assessment and Support Group (ASG)

Each region holds a peer review to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and pilot actions are carried out to test the policy-making case (modelling tool and Imagineering Simulation) and business case (One-Stop Shop) of the transnational toolkit for Airport City development after synthesising Open Living Labs (OLLs) outcomes.

In particular, ITL leads activities related to the provision of an intensive and interactive cooperation platform via OLLs, by drawing up a methodology for their operation and peer review procedures, and supports the strategy building process.
