On November 29th, ITL introduced the Food4CE project at the 7th Regional Forum for Solidarity Economy in Emilia-Romagna, a great opportunity to showcase the work of the Italian Innovation Hub and to discuss key policy recommendations to support the growth of Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) and their logistics.

A major focus of our presentation were the logistics challenges faced by AFNs. Although often seen as secondary to production, transport and distribution are critical for the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of these networks. Challenges include geographically dispersed producers, small-scale flows of goods, and limited adoption of digital tools.

Among the recommendations discussed, particular attention was given to the need for access to knowledge and research, and to the availability of physical and energy infrastructures, such as storage and urban distribution spaces and electrified transport.

Addressing these needs is key to building resilient, sustainable, and efficient local food systems.
